LANDSCCAPE DESIGN CASE STUDY 1
Elaine and Scott engaged Changing Spaces Landscape Design in early 2005 to help them with a large flat garden that had poor outdoor living spaces and had a windswept feel about it. They had recently renovated their house. Challenges 1 No privacy or protection from Westerly winds. 2 Lack of parking 3 Narrow concrete entry path which ran alongside the bedroom windows to the front door. . 4 Narrow decks more than a metre off the ground and small, uncomfortable outdoor living spaces for a family with teenagers. 5 Gardens were ‘bitsy’.
))  Solutions 6 A Brustics fence was erected on the Western side of the house to screen the new parking area from the re tiled terrace and paved area. This fence plus planting has created much more shelter and privacy and leads onto the front entrance path which has been set off from the house with a wide garden. Solution to 1, 2 and 3 above. 7 Large decked areas at different levels were designed to create a gradual transition to the lawn. (see 4) 8 Outdoor seating was incorporated on the lower deck. (4) 9 Garden sizes and shapes were developed to set off the lawn and specimen trees 10 A raised planter for vegetables was constructed along the North facing boundary wall 11 The Northern garden between deck and boundary was planted with natives to provide more shade, encourage birds and to provide a good transition between front and back gardens.
